Huntingdon’s Volunteer Fair Brings Community Together: A Resounding Success
On 4th September, the Maple Centre on Oxmoor Estate buzzed with energy and enthusiasm as the Huntingdon Volunteer Fair, organised by the Hunts Forum of Voluntary Organisations, successfully brought together local charities, community groups, and residents eager to make a difference. The event, a key initiative by Volunteer Cambs, showcased the power of community engagement and the growing appeal of volunteering as a meaningful way to contribute to society.
Running from 1 pm to 4 pm, the fair saw an impressive turnout from both visitors and participating organisations. With no tickets required, the event was accessible to everyone, allowing attendees to explore the diverse opportunities available in their local area. Over 25 organisations set up stalls, each presenting unique volunteer roles ranging from short-term commitments to more specialised, long-term positions.
Volunteering has become increasingly popular, especially as more people seek ways to step away from screens and engage with their communities in person. The fair highlighted the many benefits of volunteering, including meeting new people, developing skills, gaining work experience, and making a tangible impact. Many organisations even offer to cover volunteer expenses, making it an attractive option for those looking to give back without incurring costs.
The variety of opportunities on display catered to a wide audience, including roles suitable for those aged 16 and above. Attendees had the chance to engage directly with representatives from organisations such as Cambridge Rape Crisis, Caring Together, Safe Soulmates, HCCN and many more. This direct interaction allowed potential volunteers to ask questions, explore roles that matched their skills and interests, and learn about the impact they could have in their community.
In addition to the in-person fair, Hunts Forum also leveraged social media to extend the event’s reach. The countywide volunteer database, Volunteer Cambs, was also promoted as a valuable resource for finding roles and making a difference.
The success of the Huntingdon Volunteer Fair not only underscored the importance of such events in connecting volunteers with meaningful opportunities but also highlighted the vibrant spirit of community in Huntingdonshire. As more people recognise the benefits of volunteering, events like this will play a crucial role in fostering a culture of giving back and making a positive impact.
