Hunts Forum Volunteer Award Winners 2023
Hunts Forum Volunteer Awards were back again this year to recognise the fantastic achievements and contributions that volunteers make across the region.
On Tuesday 4th July 2023, we held our annual ceremony at Hinchingbrooke Country Park and this year joined by Mr Daryl Brown MBE LD, who handed out the awards.
A big thank you to everyone nominated as a ‘volunteer for recognition’ this year; we were overwhelmed to receive so many deserving entries. After much deliberation, we’re delighted to reveal the three main award winners this year, including the new Trustee Award for long service, recognising someone’s continual service to an organisation.
Volunteer Awards
Gold – Roger Hickling, Huntingdon Area Money Advice (HAMA)
Judge’s Comments “Roger has a highly commendable track record with this organisation. To move from managing the centre to improving his natural skills base through learning, and then to become a prolific advisor for the centre, speaks of a strong commitment to his clients. The clients “thank you” comments tell their own story of his dedication and professionalism.”
Silver – Melanie Scholes, Hunts Community Cancer Network (HCCN)
Judge’s Comments “Melanie has an enviable track record over the years she has been involved with her organisation. Bringing her professional skills into the voluntary activities with such energy and enthusiasm, she clearly demonstrates leadership – and motivation for volunteering in/by others. In addition, her relentless fundraising programme, delivered with a smile for all, has enhanced the organisation’s ability to deliver an ambitious range of services and activities.”
Bronze – Donna Green, CARESCO
Judge’s Comments “The hours Donna has dedicated to this role over the years makes her this organisation’s longest serving volunteer and one of the most dedicated. What an outstanding nomination for such a committed, dedicated volunteer effort over many years, for CARESCO and the Sawtry Eye.”
Rural Award
Winner – Terry Mitchell, Paxton Pitts Nature Reserve
Judge’s Comments “Terry’s knowledge of farming and expertise with mechanical equipment has made a huge contribution to the cropping and clearing essential to Paxton Pits. His work has improved the efficiency of reserve management and its viability as a precious community resource. He demonstrates to us all that, whatever your skill set, there are always opportunities out there in the community to volunteer and make a difference. ”
Young Volunteer of the Year Award
Winner – Tom Askew, The Commemoration Hall, Huntingdon
Judge’s Comment “THE UNSUNG HERO -This young man has been making magic happen for thousands of people from all walks of life for over five years. He is not your normal people-focused volunteer, he speaks to his audiences through lighting, sound and special effects. He has learned his skills ‘on the job’, and is saving the theatre a small fortune in not having to pay for ‘professionals’. The key to his success in this award is his mentoring a young autistic man as back-up for himself. So he will ensure the show goes on, no matter where he himself moves to pursue his passion for creating audio and visual effects for theatre and other events. Well done Tom for being such a reliable and resourceful volunteer, and for over five years’ dedication.”
Trustee Volunteer Award
Winner – Maria Russo, Loves Farm House Community Centre
Judge’s Comments “It was evident from the very detailed nomination what an impact Maria makes on the organisation they are part of, with her energy, enthusiasm, creativity and sheer hard work having a positive effect on both her colleagues and the wider community (from recruiting new volunteers to engaging with local residents). On top of the role of Trustee, Maria is Vice Chair, part of the Operations and leader of both the Events and Gardening teams – showing that this contribution is vast and deeply valued.”
